The Heritage Engineering Apprenticeship Awards recognise individuals and institutions who have made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of apprenticeships and skills in the field of Heritage Engineering.
Paul and Andrew Wood
Paul and Andrew Wood bought and restored their first car, an Austin 7 aged 14. They saved up the £15 for it by chopping firewood and selling it locally. The business they now own, P&A Wood has over 70 employees and is the only Rolls-Royce dealer to be authorised to work on everything from heritage vehicles to modern Bentley & Rolls-Royces. P&A Wood were the principal employer who founded Heritage Engineering Apprenticeships.
John Pitchforth
John is founder and Managing Director of the Heritage Skills Academy. Since its foundation in 2018, the Heritage Skills Academy has established itself as the pre-eminent provider of heritage engineering skills training from its campuses at Bicester Heritage and Brooklands Museum.
Francis Galashan
Founding Chairman of Bicester Heritage, Francis picked up the phone in 2013 and called the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs to see if they could work together to form an apprenticeship programme in classic vehicle restoration. The rest, as they say, is history.
David Whale
David is well known for his work as a volunteer leading the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs for over 10 years. More recently David has been involved in the establishment of the Federation Skills Trust, a charity spun out of the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs with the objectives of training and teaching engineering skills for the repair, maintenance, preservation and renovation of all types of historic transport, not just motor vehicles.
Karl Carter
Karl Carter has been actively hands-on in developing the Heritage Engineering programme through his roles as Director of Skills at the FBHVC since 2013 and as deputy-Chair of the Federation Skills Trust.
Graham Nicholls
Whilst at Jaguar Landrover, Graham was Chairman of the Heritage Engineering Trailblazer group which created the apprenticeship Standard. He currently oversees all end-point assessments as part of his role at the Institution of Engineering and Technology and he continues to serve as vice-chair of the employers' Trailblazer group. Graham is thus very much the Guardian of the highest quality standards that this apprenticeship is known for.
